His etchings are made on copper and then he uses a ground down sewing needle so that he can get just the right sized point to scratch the lines into a dark wax surface that covers the polished copper.  After the drawing is completed, the plate is put into an acid bath \u003c\/span\u003ewhich\u003cspan\u003e etches the lines into the plate.
