This is a 17th-century Jacobean-style wainscot high chair. Signed on the underside by an unidentified artisan believed by the original collector to be Spanish. The tall paneled back features a hand-carved diamond motif, framed within a traditional wainscot panel with hand-carved decorations on the crest rail. Gracefully shaped scrolled armrests rest upon finely turned supports, while the sturdy seat is supported by baluster-and-block turned front legs. The rear legs care joined together with a low stretcher. Finished in a warm, richly stained hardwood.
Its proportions make it ideal as a child's high chair in a Tudor, Jacobean, Colonial, or early manor house setting.
