A maid emerges from the dark background to hand a letter to her elegantly dressed mistress, who pauses with one hand raised thoughtfully to her chin. Vermeer’s original is generally dated ca. 1664–67. IGMA Artist Paul Saltarelli captures the rich contrast between the deep burgundy-brown background, the servant’s subdued clothing, and the mistress’s luminous yellow, fur-trimmed gown. The tiny writing table, letter, pearls, and ornate gold-toned frame give this miniature reproduction a particularly convincing Old Master presence.
